In the late summer of 2014, a vibrant life was tragically cut short in Las Vegas, Nevada. Deanna Serano, a 33-year-old Black / African American woman, found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, a victim of a senseless act of violence that unfolded in the early morning hours of August 16th. What began as a dispute inside a restaurant near Flamingo Road and the 215 Beltway soon spilled out into the parking lot, escalating into a chaotic and ultimately fatal confrontation.
The
night's festivities took a dark turn when an argument involving several people grew heated. A man, later identified as 27-year-old Carim Cruz, became embroiled in the altercation which turned physical outside the establishment. Following the fight, Cruz reportedly entered a dark blue four-door Mercedes-Benz and, as he drove away, fired multiple shots into the crowd that had gathered. In the ensuing panic and confusion, Deanna Serano was struck by a bullet to the chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene, her life extinguished in a brutal and public manner. Another woman was also injured in the shooting and was transported to University Medical Center for treatment.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led them to identify Carim Cruz as the primary suspect. Described as being 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing approximately 165 pounds, a search for Cruz began. He was considered armed and dangerous. The manhunt concluded on August 21, 2014, when Cruz was apprehended and taken into custody. He was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center and faced a litany of charges, including murder, attempted murder, and assault, bringing a swift, though not final, resolution to a night that ended in heartbreak and loss for the family and friends of Deanna Serano.
