In the early hours of New Year's Day 2015, the life of 26-year-old Kendral Leonard Earl Anderson, a Black male, was cut short in Las Vegas. The Clark County coroner's office would later confirm that he died from a gunshot wound to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide. The incident marked the first homicide in the city for the new year.
The events leading to Anderson's death began with a fight in an apartment complex on North Bruce Street, near East Washington Avenue.
Following this initial altercation, Anderson, along with family members of one of the individuals involved, returned to the residence to confront others connected to the dispute. This led to a second fight breaking out in front of one of the apartments.
As the confrontation escalated, two individuals from the second fight retreated into an apartment. Anderson, who was armed with a gun, then forced his way inside the dwelling. It was at this point that he was shot. He was transported to University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's homicide unit launched an investigation into the shooting. Authorities interviewed several people in the immediate aftermath, but the individual who fired the shot that killed Anderson was not immediately identified. The initial police reports indicated that the shooting appeared to be an act of self-defense. At the time of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the death of Kendral Leonard Earl Anderson, and the investigation was ongoing.
