On the evening of January 7, 2021, the life of 32-year-old Hispanic male Jose Santa Cruz was tragically cut short in a shopping plaza parking lot on East Charleston Boulevard in Las Vegas, Nevada. A special education teacher, Santa Cruz was with his father, who was setting up their family's taco truck nearby. An argument reportedly broke out between Santa Cruz and another male, allegedly concerning graffiti.
The confrontation escalated, and gunshots rang out, leaving Santa Cruz with fatal wounds to his torso.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Santa Cruz was rushed to University Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries. The Clark County coroner's office later officially ruled his death a homicide. Witnesses at the shopping plaza described seeing a man flee the area immediately after the shooting.
The investigation into the death of Jose Santa Cruz led Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to identify a suspect. Within a week of the shooting, 18-year-old Zyonn Dawson was arrested in connection with the killing. Dawson was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center and faced a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. Surveillance footage from the area played a role in his identification and arrest.
