Devonta Lewis Jr., 4 months old, male, African-American, was found unresponsive just after midnight on December 10, 2015, at an apartment in the 5100 block of East Sahara Avenue near Nellis Boulevard in Las Vegas. Firefighters alerted police around 12:24 a.m., and officers also responded to Sunrise Hospital, where the infant was pronounced dead at 12:34 a.m. The Clark County coroner later determined he died from multiple blunt-force injuries, ruling the death a homicide.
Investigators focused on the child's father, 22-year-old Devonta Lewis Sr., who had been caring for the baby. He was arrested on January 15, 2016, initially on a charge of child abuse with substantial bodily harm. According to an arrest report obtained by local media, the infant had suffered a skull fracture, a lacerated liver, rib fractures, and numerous bruises. As the coroner's findings came in, prosecutors revised the case and Lewis Sr. was charged with murder in connection with his son's death. In interviews described in court documents and reporting, he denied hitting the baby, saying he might have tugged the child's shirt, even as detectives documented traumatic injuries inconsistent with an accident.
The killing left relatives reeling, with family members describing the loss and the sudden turn from mourning to an arrest within weeks.
