In a tragic turn of events on the evening of April 12, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, a domestic dispute culminated in the death of Deandre L. Rawls. The 29-year-old African-American man sustained fatal stab wounds to his chest.
The incident unfolded in a vehicle near U.S. Highway 95 and Valley View Boulevard. According to authorities, Rawls was allegedly in the process of attacking his 26-year-old girlfriend, who was driving, when she stabbed him.
Following the altercation, she drove the unresponsive Rawls to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after their 8 p.m. arrival.
During the investigation that followed, the girlfriend provided a compelling statement to homicide detectives, detailing a history of abuse and the specifics of the attack in the vehicle. The couple's 5-year-old child was also present in the back seat of the car during the incident but was unharmed.
After being detained and questioned at the hospital, the woman was released early the following Thursday. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department indicated that she was unlikely to face any charges in connection with Rawls' death, as the evidence suggested she acted in self-defense.
