On that morning, Israel was shot in the head by his mother, Shavon Carrillo, also known as Shavon Aguilar or Shavon Jacklein Carrillo.
According to police reports, Shavon Carrillo, who was 32 years
old at the time, had planned a murder-suicide involving her three children. She was reportedly upset about the breakup of her 12-year marriage and had moved in with her sister in northwest Las Vegas. On the day of the incident, Shavon allegedly fetched a. 22-caliber rifle, lay next to Israel in his sleeping bag, and told him she loved him before pulling the trigger. Two young girls were also present in the small bedroom when the shooting occurred. The brother-in-law of Shavon heard the first shot and intervened, grabbing the rifle from her to prevent further shots from being fired.
Shavon Carrillo was arrested and initially charged with one count of attempted murder and three counts of child abuse. She was being held at the Clark County jail on $750,000 bail. Following Israel's death, which was ruled a homicide by the Clark County coroner's office, prosecutors indicated that the charges against Shavon would likely be upgraded to murder. Shavon had pleaded not guilty to the initial charges and was scheduled for trial on August 31, 2015.
Israel Carrillo died on June 9, 2015, at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas, due to complications from the gunshot wound he sustained over a year earlier.
