A sense of normalcy was shattered on the afternoon of Monday, September 18, 2023, in Columbus, Georgia, when 15-year-old De’Shunvia Lindsey, a Black male, was tragically killed in a brazen drive-by shooting. The incident unfolded at approximately 5:13 p.m. at the Fluellen Recreational Center, a place typically filled with the sounds of children playing and community members enjoying the outdoor space.
On this day, however, the park became a scene of violence that would cut short a young life.
Emergency services were dispatched to the 2800 block of 8th Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Lindsey suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional hospital, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries. The community was left in shock and mourning over the loss of the teenager, who was remembered by some as just a 'baby' who was enjoying himself in a place where he should have been safe.
The investigation into the homicide moved swiftly. Two days after the fatal shooting, on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, the Columbus Police Department announced an arrest in connection with the case. With the assistance of the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office, they took a suspect into custody.
The individual arrested was identified as Camario Carter. He has been charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime for his alleged role in the death of De'Shunvia Lindsey. The arrest brought a small measure of resolution to a community shaken by the violent and untimely death of one of its young members.
