In the early morning hours of Mother's Day, May 10, 2015, Epri Nataye Cain, a 32-year-old Black / African American woman, was fatally shot in her Las Vegas, Nevada, apartment. The incident occurred at approximately 3:45 a.m. in the 4800 block of Cleopatra Avenue. At the time, Cain was at home with a family member, watching television, when they heard a knock at the front door.
Cain approached the door and opened the main door, but prudently kept the metal security door closed.
Through the security door, a conversation with the person or people on the other side took place. Shortly after, the individual outside fired multiple gunshots through the security door, striking Cain. The assailant then fled the scene. Responding to the call, law enforcement found Cain suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators described the suspected shooter as a Black man who was wearing a white shirt and tan-colored shorts. He was seen leaving the apartment complex in a light-colored, four-door sedan with tinted windows. Another man was reportedly driving the vehicle. In the days following the shooting, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that they had not made any arrests and had not identified any suspects in the slaying of Epri Nataye Cain.
The case was investigated as a homicide, and authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for her death. Despite the initial investigation and the description of the suspect and the getaway vehicle, there have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the years since the incident. The motive for the shooting also remains unclear from the available information.
