On the morning of October 15, 2015, the life of Linda Lush, a 50-year-old woman, came to a tragic end in Las Vegas, Nevada, following a confrontation with police. The events began to unfold when an undercover officer from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spotted a vehicle speeding on Desert Inn Road. A check of the license plate revealed the car had been reported as embezzled, and the driver, Lush, matched the description of the suspect.
Rather than initiating a high-speed
chase through city streets, officers decided to track the vehicle's movements using an air unit for public safety. While she was stopped at a red light, an officer observed Lush inside the car, pointing a silver handgun at the roof of the vehicle. This information was relayed to other officers, indicating that the situation had escalated and the suspect was armed and behaving erratically. Lush then sped into the parking lot of a strip mall located at 3400 S. Jones Blvd., where she nearly struck a pedestrian.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation and prevent her from fleeing, police positioned two armored SWAT vehicles, known as "Bearcats," in front of and behind Lush's car to block her in. As the armored vehicles were moving into place, Lush attempted to maneuver her car and then fired her gun three times through her windshield directly at the officers in the Bearcat positioned in front of her. In response to this immediate threat, four SWAT officers returned fire.
Linda Lush was struck by the officers' gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. A subsequent investigation into her death by the Clark County District Attorney's Office concluded that the officers' actions were not criminal in nature. The investigation revealed a deeper personal struggle, uncovering that Lush had a history of at least eight prior suicide attempts. Investigators also found several suicide notes inside her vehicle, leading those close to her to believe that her actions were a deliberate attempt to force a lethal confrontation with law enforcement, an act often referred to as "suicide by cop." A toxicology report conducted during the autopsy revealed the presence of alcohol, amphetamine, methamphetamine, THC, and cocaine in her system at the time of her death.
