In the late hours of a Saturday night in Las Vegas, on April 1, 2017, the life of 40-year-old Jose Ignacio Villanueva III came to a violent end. A Hispanic male, Villanueva was found inside an apartment on Thunder Street with multiple gunshot wounds. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the residence around 10:30 p.m., they discovered Villanueva in the bathroom, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Evidence of the grim events that had transpired was apparent, with seven spent cartridge casings found near his body.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Villanueva had been shot multiple times, sustaining wounds to his legs, back, and left shoulder. At the scene, officers encountered his girlfriend, 35-year-old Lisa Hollopeter. She remained at the apartment and was ultimately arrested in connection with the fatal shooting.
During questioning, Hollopeter admitted to shooting her boyfriend. However, her account of the events leading to Villanueva's death was inconsistent, as she provided investigators with several different versions of her story. This led police to take her into custody on a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. Further investigation into their relationship suggested that the couple had been experiencing ongoing problems, which culminated in the deadly shooting that night.
