In the late hours of a Thursday in North Las Vegas, the life of 23-year-old Damaryo Morris, a Black / African American male, was tragically cut short on May 11, 2017. He was standing outside a retail store in a parking lot on the 2100 block of East Cheyenne Avenue when the fatal encounter occurred. An assailant approached him and opened fire, striking him multiple times before quickly fleeing the scene.
The aftermath was grim, with Morris being found deceased in the parking lot.
The Clark County coroner would later confirm that he died from multiple gunshot wounds. The North Las Vegas Police Department launched an investigation into the city's 10th homicide of that year.
The investigation led to a significant development several weeks later. Authorities arrested 25-year-old Roman Welsh in connection with the shooting. Police indicated that it appeared Morris and Welsh were acquainted with each other. Welsh was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center, facing a charge of open murder for his alleged role in the death of Damaryo Morris.
