Lorenzo Vasquez-Lopez, a 41-year-old Hispanic / Latino man, was killed in Columbus, Georgia, on October 12, 2021, when a burst of violence tore through the Beallwood area and left multiple people shot. Early reporting described a chaotic evening with shootings unfolding at more than one location, and police said officers were investigating gunfire around 47th Street as the city tried to piece together what had happened.
By the time Vasquez-Lopez was rushed to the hospital, his wounds were too severe, and an emergency room physician later pronounced him dead. Public reporting at the time also said two other people survived the shooting that took his life, turning the case into both a homicide investigation and part of a much larger search for those responsible.

Nearly ten months after the killing, Mikita Leonard was arrested on August 12, 2022, and charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault. A Columbus Police release then said Derek Riley was arrested on October 6, 2022, facing charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The fourth suspect named publicly was William Leonard, who police said was arrested on October 11, 2022, and charged with murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
Publicly available reporting shows that by August 2022, Mikita Leonard had appeared in Recorder’s Court and entered a not guilty plea at a preliminary hearing, with the case moving forward from there.
