In the winter of 2021, the life of 35-year-old Joseph Ivory Dukes, a Black/African American man, was tragically cut short in Columbus, Georgia. On the evening of January 20th, Dukes was discovered on Moye Road in East Columbus, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was urgently transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown Hospital, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
Before his passing, in what is often referred to as a dying declaration, Dukes identified
his attacker as Deante Caruthers, a 32-year-old acquaintance with whom he reportedly had an ongoing dispute. This crucial piece of information, relayed to a police corporal and paramedics, set the course for the investigation that followed. An investigation revealed that Dukes had been shot four times, with two of the bullets striking him in the back. Witnesses in the area also reported seeing the two men in the middle of the roadway during the incident.
The Columbus Police Department swiftly moved forward with the case, and on February 4, 2021, Deante Caruthers was arrested and charged with the murder of Joseph Dukes. The case proceeded to trial, where after nine hours of deliberation, a jury found Caruthers guilty of malice murder. On February 1, 2024, a Superior Court Judge sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Caruthers will not be eligible for parole consideration until he has served a minimum of 30 years. An additional five years were added to his sentence for a gun charge conviction.
