In the afternoon hours of May 5, 2025, a burst of violence at the Avalon Apartments on Cusseta Road in Columbus, Georgia, claimed the life of 33-year-old Chastin Hunter, a Black male. Hunter was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds around 2:39 p.m. and was rushed to Piedmont Columbus Regional hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced deceased at 5:32 p.m.
Another man, later identified as Hunter's brother, was also injured in the shooting and arrived at the same hospital in a stable condition.
The investigation into the deadly shooting, led by the Columbus Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit, quickly began to yield results. Through witness statements and other investigative leads, authorities identified multiple suspects. The day after the shooting, on May 6, 2025, police arrested 17-year-old Anthony Pollard, Jr. He was charged with murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. That same day, a second suspect, 69-year-old Eugene Mabry, was also taken into custody and faced charges of murder, aggravated assault, and armed robbery.
As the investigation continued, a third individual was implicated in the crime. On June 10, 2025, more than a month after the shooting, 16-year-old Kadin Mabry was arrested on outstanding warrants. He was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and criminal attempt armed robbery. Investigators also located a Kia Soul believed to have been used during the commission of the crime on Hawaii Way. A subsequent search of the location yielded additional evidence. While three arrests have been made, authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing and that more arrests are possible. Both Anthony Pollard, Jr., and Eugene Mabry were scheduled for court appearances on May 7, 2025, while Kadin Mabry's preliminary hearing was set for June 13, 2025.
