Rene Enriquez Jr., a 39-year-old Hispanic male, found himself in a perilous situation following a police raid on his Las Vegas home on October 20, 2022. Law enforcement had seized significant quantities of methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl. However, Enriquez was not arrested; instead, he was released to receive medical attention for being under the influence of drugs.
This act of leniency would prove fatal, as a false rumor began to circulate among his associates: that he had cooperated with the police to avoid arrest. This unfounded belief that he was a "snitch" set in motion a tragic chain of events.
A few days later, on October 27, an acquaintance named Ryan Bentley offered Enriquez what he called a "care package," presumably of drugs. Trusting his associate, Enriquez went to meet Bentley and was never heard from by his family again. The offer was a deceptive trap. At Bentley's residence, Enriquez was confronted by Bentley and other men. They gave him a grim choice: intentionally overdose on fentanyl or be shot and killed. Enriquez chose to snort several lines of the powerful opioid and lost consciousness. However, he did not succumb to the drugs. Upon waking up, he desperately tried to escape, banging on the garage door for help. His escape attempt was futile; Bentley shot and killed him on October 28.
After the murder, Bentley went to great lengths to conceal his crime. He dismembered Enriquez's body and placed the remains into a 55-gallon drum. He even sought advice on how to use lye to accelerate decomposition. For a month, Enriquez was considered a missing person. The gruesome truth was not revealed until November 29, 2022, when a public works contractor discovered the barrel in the area of East Quail Avenue and Palm Street. The unmistakable smell of decomposition led to the grim discovery of human remains, later identified as Enriquez.
The investigation quickly led police to Ryan Bentley. Witnesses had reported hearing gunshots near his home around the time of the murder, and some saw him acting suspiciously. Bentley was arrested on November 29 and charged with open murder. A second individual, 30-year-old Angelica Hudson, was also arrested in connection with the murder on December 7, but the charges against her were later dropped. In February 2025, a jury found Ryan Bentley guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder.
