In the late summer of 2018, a dispute over a mere $10 escalated into a fatal encounter for a 55-year-old Hispanic male from North Las Vegas. Richard G. Gomez was shot and killed on the evening of August 28, 2018, in the parking lot of a restaurant on the 1500 block of North Eastern Avenue, near East Owens Avenue. The argument that sealed his fate was with another man over a small monetary debt.
The disagreement turned violent when the other man, later identified as 32-year-old DeAndre
Rhone, allegedly left the scene only to return shortly after, armed with a firearm. Witnesses reported that following a brief confrontation, a single gunshot ended Gomez's life. He was pronounced dead at the scene. In the immediate aftermath, helpful bystanders who witnessed the shooting followed the fleeing suspect and provided a description to the police. This initially led North Las Vegas police to take a different individual into custody. However, after further investigation, Las Vegas police determined this person was not involved and he was subsequently released.
Several witnesses in the area knew the alleged shooter by the nickname “Dre” and identified him to investigators. This information, coupled with photo lineups, pointed detectives toward DeAndre Rhone. According to police reports, after the initial argument, Rhone had walked home, changed his clothes, and then returned to the parking lot about 10 minutes later with a large-caliber firearm. Security footage from the surrounding area reportedly captured a change in his gait, suggesting he was concealing the weapon. Based on the evidence and witness testimony, DeAndre Rhone was arrested and charged with murder. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and held without bail.
