In North Las Vegas, Nevada, a tragic event unfolded on the evening of May 14, 2019, leading to the death of 48-year-old Black / African American male, Michael Ray Jamerson. The scene was set in his own home on Harold Street, where a quiet evening was shattered by a single, fatal gunshot. Jamerson's 12-year-old son was in the shower when he heard a loud bang. Gripped by fear, the young boy remained in the bathroom and called 911 for help.
When officers arrived, they discovered Michael Ray Jamerson's body in the laundry room near the front door. He had been shot once in the head, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
The initial investigation revealed a targeted attack. Detectives found a hole in an exterior wall, suggesting the assailant broke in and laid in wait for Jamerson to return home. Suspicion soon turned towards someone familiar with the home and the victim's routine. Family members and associates pointed investigators toward Jamerson's estranged older son, 32-year-old Michael Jamerson Jr. The relationship between father and son was strained; the younger Jamerson had been kicked out of the house months earlier for failing to pay rent and for an incident involving the accidental discharge of a firearm. Adding to the suspicion, Jamerson Jr. had moved into his deceased father's home on the very night of the murder.
As the investigation progressed, incriminating evidence began to surface. Detectives discovered that after being contacted for an interview, Jamerson Jr. had conducted internet searches for phrases like "how do you find out youre a suspect in a murder" and "how police interrogate murder suspects." A significant breakthrough came when a handgun, which Jamerson Jr.'s aunt had taken from him, was turned over to the police. Ballistics tests confirmed that a casing found at the murder scene was fired from this gun, and the bullet recovered from the victim's body was also a match. It was also suggested that a potential motive was financial, as family members told police the son was expecting to inherit the house and benefit from life insurance policies.
On May 30, 2019, North Las Vegas police arrested Michael Jamerson Jr. at his father's home. He was subsequently charged with murder with a deadly weapon and burglary with a deadly weapon. Despite the mounting evidence, Jamerson Jr.'s attorney stated his client intended to plead not guilty, urging the public to withhold judgment until all the facts were presented in court. The family was left divided and devastated by the turn of events, facing the dual tragedy of a father's death and a son's arrest for the crime.
