On a tragic day in Henderson, Nevada, Veronica Muniz, a 33-year-old Hispanic female, lost her life in a violent and senseless act. On November 3, 2020, Muniz was at The Douglas at Stonelake Apartments when a gunman opened fire. She, along with another woman and a young boy, were fatally wounded in the attack.
That morning, at approximately 11 a.m., Henderson police responded to reports of a shooting at the apartment complex.
Upon arrival, they discovered a horrifying scene where two women, one of whom was Veronica Muniz, and a teenage girl had been shot. The suspected shooter, identified as 38-year-old Jason Bourne, had also taken a 12-year-old boy hostage.
The standoff with Bourne escalated, and he was ultimately shot and killed by police at the scene. Tragically, the young boy he was holding hostage also died during the confrontation. The Clark County coroner's office later confirmed that Veronica Muniz's death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head. Investigations revealed that Bourne lived in an apartment unit directly above the other victims. The motive for the shooting was reported to be related to the suspect's belief that the family had reported him for drug use.
Veronica Muniz was reportedly the housekeeper for the Hawatmeh family, who were the primary targets of the attack. In the aftermath, seven Henderson police officers were placed on paid administrative leave while the department investigated the officer-involved shooting aspect of the incident.
