Marvin Kelley McCoy III, a 20-year-old Black / African American male, was a celebrated athlete at Bristow High School, where he excelled in football, soccer, basketball, and track. His athletic prowess earned him a state championship in track for two consecutive years. Known for his infectious smile and vibrant personality, he was often the life of the party.
After graduating, he briefly attended Langston University.
On the night of May 30, 2021, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, McCoy was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Tyronne Brown. As they were driving south toward downtown, a dark sedan began to follow them and its occupants opened fire on their vehicle. The gunfire caused their car to veer out of control and crash into a power pole. Marvin Kelley McCoy III was killed in the crash. Brown, the driver, was struck by a bullet in the head but survived his severe injuries.
The Tulsa Police Department's investigation into the incident led them to believe the shooting was likely gang-related. Despite their efforts, the case has remained unsolved, and no arrests have been made. Detectives have stated that they need more evidence to identify and bring the perpetrator or perpetrators to justice and have urged the public to come forward with any information.
