In the autumn of 2016, a fatal encounter unfolded at a Tulsa, Oklahoma motel, culminating in the death of 51-year-old Rodney McGee. The evening of November 18th began with a gathering in a room at the Holiday Express Motel, where a group of people were drinking and using drugs. An argument broke out between James Mahdavi and two other individuals, including McGee.
The dispute led to Mahdavi being asked to leave the room.
Later that night, around 9:30 p.m., the conflict escalated dramatically. Surveillance footage from the motel captured the chilling moments as Mahdavi approached Rodney McGee in the parking lot and shot him in the head. McGee was pronounced dead at the scene. The violence did not end there. Mahdavi then proceeded to another motel room window and fired through it, striking 29-year-old Leroy Coleman Jr. in the neck. Coleman, the motel's maintenance man, succumbed to his injuries two days later.
Following the deadly shootings, James Mahdavi fled but was later apprehended by police after a standoff. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Rodney McGee and Leroy Coleman Jr. In 2018, a jury found Mahdavi guilty on both counts. The conviction was supported by substantial evidence, including the motel's surveillance video and eyewitness testimony. For his crimes, James Mahdavi was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole. An appeal of his conviction was later unsuccessful.
