In the early hours of September 16, 2020, the life of 52-year-old James Sumner Jr. was tragically cut short in a violent encounter at the Colonial Park Apartments in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Officers responded to a call of a shooting at the complex, located near 21st and Memorial, around 1:30 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Sumner with a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of the White / Caucasian male quickly led Tulsa police to identify two suspects, Andre Roberts and Candace McGrew. The motive for the deadly shooting was determined to be robbery. Investigators learned that McGrew had been with Sumner the previous day and was aware that he was expecting to receive some money. It is believed she and Roberts then conspired to rob him.
Their plan tragically escalated, resulting in Sumner being shot. Both Roberts and McGrew were apprehended and subsequently charged with first-degree murder for their roles in the crime. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Andre Roberts entered a guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter, assault and battery, and possession of a firearm after a prior felony conviction. Candace McGrew also faced charges related to the robbery and murder.
