On the evening of April 12, 2021, Maurice Burgess, a 36-year-old African American man, was riding his bicycle in the parking lot of the Waterstone Apartments near South Peoria Avenue in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when he was senselessly shot and killed. The attack was unprovoked, a fact that would later come to light as the details of the investigation emerged. Burgess was found on the ground near his bicycle with gunshot wounds, and no weapon was found on or near him.
