On a summer night in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the life of 28-year-old Brad Lyles, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 14, 2013, while visiting his family at the Western Pines apartment complex on South Maybelle Avenue, Lyles was ambushed. He was discovered lying in a doorway with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. His twin brother was among the family members present at the complex who heard the gunshots and found him.
Lyles was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at 2:38 a.m.
Investigators from the Tulsa Police Department described the attack as an 'ambush.' The motive behind the shooting remained a mystery, with detectives considering the possibility that Lyles was the victim of mistaken identity. The investigation was hampered by the reluctance of witnesses to come forward with information. Family members acknowledged that Brad Lyles had a criminal past but insisted he had been working to turn his life around, a change spurred by the recent death of his mother. At the time of his death, he was the father of five children.
In the days following the homicide, police identified a person of interest they wanted to question. Eighteen-year-old Keenan Sean Davis was located and arrested in Bartlesville on unrelated charges. While he was named a person of interest in Lyles' murder, he was not formally charged in connection with the killing. The case grew cold, and despite the authorities' pleas for anyone with information to come forward, the shooting of Brad Lyles remains unsolved.
