In a wooded area near the railroad tracks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the life of 40-year-old Alcides Monroig was tragically cut short on the night of February 24, 2024. Monroig, a male, was at a homeless encampment when the sound of gunfire shattered the midnight quiet. When Tulsa Police officers were flagged down and led to the scene, they discovered two individuals in their tents had been shot. Medical personnel rendered aid, but sadly, Alcides Monroig was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another victim, a woman, sustained multiple gunshot wounds but survived and was transported to a local hospital.
The investigation into the double shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 33-year-old Cameron Lynn. According to the surviving victim and witnesses, Lynn had approached the encampment while they were sleeping and began rummaging through their belongings, claiming he was looking for his things. When asked to leave, Lynn refused and opened fire on the two tents before fleeing the area. Witnesses reported seeing Lynn heading towards the encampment and then running away after the shots were fired, telling them he had shot in self-defense and that they needed to leave.
An arrest warrant was issued for Cameron Lynn, who was subsequently apprehended. Lynn, a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, was prosecuted in federal court. In an attempt to evade justice, he altered his appearance and initially claimed his brother was the shooter when questioned by detectives. However, in October 2024, a federal jury found Cameron Lynn guilty on all counts, including First Degree Murder in Indian Country. Following his conviction, Lynn was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Alcides Monroig, with an additional ten years for discharging a weapon during a crime of violence.
