On July 6, 2018, the quiet life of 84-year-old Donna McElfresh, a White/Caucasian female, was brought to a tragic and violent end in her Henderson, Nevada apartment. Emergency services were initially summoned to her residence at 501 E. Lake Mead Parkway for a fire. Upon their arrival and after extinguishing the blaze, they discovered McElfresh inside her bedroom with significant trauma to her head and face. Despite being rushed to St. Rose Dominican Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
The Clark County coroner's office would later determine that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, and the fire was ruled to have been intentionally set in an attempt to conceal the crime.
The investigation into the death of the beloved military veteran, who had served in both the Air Force and the Navy, quickly shifted from a fire investigation to a homicide case. Detectives at the scene found that McElfresh's apartment had been ransacked. Valuables, including jewelry, cash, and her wallet, were missing. One of the key pieces of evidence left behind were partial footprints from a pair of Nike Air Jordan sneakers. Investigators determined that no one known to be permitted in McElfresh's apartment wore that type of shoe. This clue would prove to be pivotal in the search for her killer.
The investigation led police to 29-year-old Vernon McClelland Jr. Security footage from two local pawn shops, recorded within 48 hours of the murder, showed McClelland wearing the same distinctive sneakers. Further investigation revealed that McClelland was a relative of one of McElfresh's neighbors and would have been aware that the elderly woman lived alone and was known to wear a significant amount of jewelry. On the morning of the murder, the relative he was connected to was serving on jury duty, leaving her own apartment empty. When authorities located and arrested McClelland, they found a silver handgun in his possession. Ballistics testing matched a live round in his weapon to a spent cartridge discovered in McElfresh's bedroom. Vernon McClelland Jr. was subsequently arrested and faced charges of murder, first-degree arson, and burglary in connection with the death of Donna McElfresh.
