On the Fourth of July in 2023, a day typically marked by celebration, a tragedy unfolded in a Henderson, Nevada home. Susan Tobey, a 79-year-old woman, was found by police and fire department personnel responding to a report of a possible slaying at a residence on Las Palmas Entrada Avenue. She was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into her death quickly led to an arrest.
Her husband, 86-year-old Jerome Seligman, allegedly contacted the police himself and admitted to shooting his wife. Officers who arrived at the scene recovered a. 38 caliber handgun in a holster on the kitchen floor. Seligman reportedly told the authorities that he was "really depressed" and that the state of his wife's room was a contributing factor to his actions, stating that if they saw it, they would understand his depression.
Seligman was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Henderson Detention Center, facing a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon. This was not his first encounter with law enforcement involving a firearm; in 2018, he had been arrested for allegedly aiming a gun at another individual. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of misdemeanor assault in that case. The death of Susan Tobey marked the fifth homicide in the city of Henderson for that year.
