In the late hours of a Thursday night in Las Vegas, a gathering among neighbors would end in tragedy, forever altering the lives of those present. On March 3, 2022, Marquis Lamar Johnson, a 28-year-old Black / African American man, was fatally wounded in a shooting that erupted from a dispute. The incident unfolded at the Siegel Suites in the 4000 block of South University Center Drive, a location not far from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus.
That evening, what began as a
quarrel between residents escalated dramatically into gunfire. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived around 11:30 p.m., they found a chaotic scene. Johnson had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to University Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal. In the aftermath of the shooting, it was discovered that six other individuals had also been shot. These victims managed to transport themselves to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the deadly encounter began immediately, with homicide detectives canvassing the apartment complex for evidence and witnesses. In the days following the shooting, police appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and capture of those responsible. Law enforcement stated they were searching for at least one shooter who had fled the scene after the violent altercation.
