On a Tuesday afternoon in Las Vegas, on March 9, 2021, the life of 30-year-old Donielle Lamone Thompson, a Black / African American male, was cut short. His body was discovered behind a vacant building in the vicinity of West Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard after people working nearby reported hearing gunshots and seeing a man on the ground. When officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department arrived shortly before 1:30 p.m., they found Thompson suffering from a gunshot wound to
the chest. He was rushed to University Medical Center, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The Clark County Coroner's office would later rule his death a homicide.
In the initial stages of the investigation, the motive for the shooting was unclear, and no suspects were immediately identified. The police appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. The case did not remain cold for long, however. Less than a month later, on April 9, 2021, authorities arrested 51-year-old Eric Fleming in connection with Thompson's murder. Fleming was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center and charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon.
Court documents revealed that the motive behind the deadly encounter was an alleged drug-related debt. Investigators uncovered text messages sent from Fleming to Thompson in the month leading up to the shooting, which contained threats. In one message, Fleming reportedly wrote, "so you going to make me come down there," followed by, "that dime will cost you dearly I promise you that." Further investigation of cell phone records proved to be crucial. Police found that texts from Fleming's phone to Thompson's ceased on the night of the shooting. More damningly, GPS data from Fleming's phone placed him in the same parking lot where Thompson was found at the time the shooting occurred. It was also revealed that Fleming had an extensive criminal history dating back to 1993, with convictions for offenses that included robbery with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, and drug trafficking.
