In the summer of 2008, a wave of violence troubled the city of Pittsburgh, and among its victims was a 29-year-old man named Jomo Ali Griffin. On a Tuesday in late July, Griffin was shot and killed in the Arlington neighborhood, one of five people to lose their lives to homicide in the city within a single week. The death of the young, male victim added to the growing concerns about street violence that year, which had seen an increase in homicides compared to the previous year.
