On a hot August day in Las Vegas, a foul odor emanating from a white BMW parked at a Budget Suites on Tropicana Avenue led to a grim discovery. On August 19, 2022, police found the body of a man, later identified as 41-year-old Amir Haggi, in the trunk of the vehicle. An investigation by the Clark County Coroner's office would later determine that he had died from gunshot wounds to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Haggi's death revealed a story that
began months earlier. Haggi was last seen alive on June 5, leaving his home in Phoenix, Arizona, after receiving a phone call. That call, police would discover, came from his business partner, Tony Danh, who was 37 at the time. The two men co-owned a business in Phoenix, and employees reported that they had not received their paychecks for June and had been unable to contact either owner. Investigators learned that Danh had a gambling problem and had been seen asking Haggi for money before he disappeared. The day after Haggi was last seen, there were attempts to access his financial accounts.
The white BMW where Haggi's body was found was registered to Tony Danh, and paperwork bearing his name was inside the glove compartment. Further investigation uncovered a receipt from a Walmart in California for items such as cleaning supplies, roofing tar, and paint rollers. Surveillance footage from the store showed a man matching Danh's description purchasing these items. Police believe that after the murder, Danh stored the car containing Haggi's body in a rented garage before having it towed to the Budget Suites. He then reportedly fled to Mexico.
A multi-agency criminal apprehension team, including FBI agents and officers from several Nevada police departments, located and arrested Tony Danh in San Diego on September 29, 2022. He was later extradited to Las Vegas to face an open murder charge in connection with the death of his business partner.
