On November 20, 2022, 37-year-old Ricardo Ruiz was inside a 7-Eleven store located at 1101 E. Bonanza Road, near North Maryland Parkway in Las Vegas, when he was shot multiple times through a window by two assailants. Fifteen 9mm shell casings were recovered from the scene. Ruiz was transported to University Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries on November 27, 2022.
Earlier that day, surveillance footage captured an altercation between Ruiz and four young men inside the same 7-Eleven. Approximately six hours after this confrontation, two individuals returned to the store and fired multiple shots into the establishment, striking Ruiz. Investigators suspected the shooting was gang-related.
The breakthrough in the case came on November 26, when an undercover detective observed a man spray-painting graffiti near North 14th Street and East Mesquite Avenue. The man fled in a dark blue Nissan, which police later linked to the earlier altercation at the 7-Eleven. Further investigation identified the vehicle as being associated with 18-year-old Edwin Medrano-Sanchez, who had been previously documented driving it in a hit-and-run incident in February 2022.
On January 9, 2023, authorities arrested Medrano-Sanchez. A search of his residence yielded a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. He was charged with open murder with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, and additional related offenses. Data from his mobile phone placed him at the scene during both the initial argument and the subsequent shooting.
As of the latest available information, Medrano-Sanchez remains in custody awaiting trial. Authorities have not disclosed whether the second shooter has been identified or apprehended, and the investigation appears to be ongoing.
