In the late evening hours of July 12, 2022, a dispute between neighbors in an east Las Vegas neighborhood escalated into a fatal encounter for Rodney Saltzman, a 49-year-old Caucasian male. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on the 4700 block of Monterrey Avenue, near Flamingo Road and Boulder Highway. Saltzman had reportedly confronted a group of individuals, including a 19-year-old and several minors, after they fell from a dividing wall into his backyard.

While holding his 2-year-old daughter, Saltzman got into a quarrel with the group about them being on his property. During the confrontation, he reportedly grabbed the sweatshirt hood of one of the teenagers. After Saltzman let go and turned away, the teenager, identified as 16-year-old Keshaughn Robinson, pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times. The gunfire also struck Saltzman's young daughter in the foot, causing injury. Rodney Saltzman was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.

Following the shooting, the juvenile suspect fled the area but was quickly apprehended by responding Metropolitan Police Department officers. Robinson was taken to the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center and subsequently charged with murder. In March of the following year, Keshaughn Robinson pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder. The next month, a district judge sentenced him to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 12 and a half years.

Rodney Saltzman, known as "Rod" to friends and family, was a husband and a father. His wife, Jennifer, later expressed that he was overjoyed to be a father and that their daughter had just turned two shortly before his death. Originally from Iowa, Saltzman was a U.S. Navy veteran who had served on the USS Conolly. He was a passionate fan of the band KISS, so much so that he and his wife were married at the KISS wedding chapel in 2019. He was also an avid Harley Davidson rider and a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Pittsburgh Steelers. His family and friends remember his love for his country, his family, and his life.
