In the early hours of August 17, 2024, a chaotic scene unfolded in a Las Vegas neighborhood that ended in the death of 51-year-old Shontaz Hutchinson, a Black male. Hutchinson was reportedly seen in the area of Vegas Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard exhibiting erratic behavior while carrying a pole. His actions escalated as he began smashing the windows of a nearby gas station and then continued to the Ada Brent Gardens Apartments, where he shattered more windows.
