In the early morning hours of April 19, 2016, a tragic and violent event unfolded in an east Las Vegas Valley apartment that claimed the life of 23-year-old Maurice Ramon White Jr. Known to his friends and family as "Reese," the young Black/African American man was at his girlfriend's apartment on Sandhill Road when the peace of the night was shattered.
Around 2 a.m., witnesses reported hearing two men yelling for the tenant, Jonette Washington, to open her door.
When she refused, the men kicked in the front door of the Bill Rayson Manor apartment. Multiple gunshots echoed through the complex, after which two men were seen fleeing the scene. Arriving officers discovered White inside the apartment, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced dead. The Clark County coroner later confirmed that White's death was a homicide resulting from these injuries.
The investigation into the murder of Maurice Ramon White Jr. led the Metropolitan Police Department to identify two suspects: Alfred Weathers, 22, and Leandre Lacey, 22. Police determined that jealousy was the motive behind the deadly home invasion. Both Weathers and Lacey were subsequently arrested and faced serious charges, including murder with a deadly weapon, burglary while in possession of a gun, and conspiracy to commit burglary.
In a further development, White's girlfriend, Jonette Washington, also faced legal consequences. She was charged with felony accessory to murder after authorities stated that she refused to identify Weathers, who was the father of her two children, and Lacey to the police in the days following the fatal shooting. The arrests brought a measure of progress in the case, pointing to a resolution for the violent act that cut short the life of Maurice Ramon White Jr.
