In a central Las Vegas apartment on a Tuesday afternoon, a dispute between acquaintances escalated into deadly violence, leaving one man dead and another facing a murder charge. The victim was identified as Bryant Vernon Johnson, a 46-year-old Black male. On April 5, 2022, Johnson was at an apartment on East Bonanza Road when a quarrel involving several people broke out. During the altercation, Johnson was shot multiple times.
He was rushed to University Medical Center, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, the suspect and several other individuals fled the apartment before law enforcement arrived. Investigators with the Metropolitan Police Department believed the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Johnson and the man who shot him. Through their investigation, detectives identified Nathan Williams, then 47, as the primary suspect. A witness told police that a man nicknamed "Black" had shot Johnson, accusing him of stealing a key.
Less than a week after the fatal shooting, on April 11, 2022, Nathan Williams was taken into custody during a traffic stop. At the time of his arrest, Williams was on parole for a 2013 robbery and assault with a deadly weapon case. Inside the vehicle he was driving, a red and white Mustang that matched a description provided by a witness, police discovered the gun used in the shooting hidden in the gear shift. Williams was subsequently booked on charges of murder, robbery, and burglary.
The legal proceedings against Nathan Williams took an unusual turn when he claimed to have seen Bryant Johnson alive in a holding cell weeks after he was accused of killing him. Williams insisted that surveillance footage would prove his claim, a belief that led to difficulties with multiple defense attorneys. Despite his assertions, the case proceeded to trial. Prosecutors presented evidence including eyewitness testimony, surveillance footage from the day of the murder, and the discovery of the murder weapon in Williams' car. The trial for the murder of Bryant Johnson commenced with the prosecution confident in the evidence against Williams.
