Amidst a scorching 105-degree heatwave in Las Vegas on June 4, 2026, a dispute between two men at Maslow Park in the east valley escalated into a fatal shooting. Alveon “Beasty” James was killed in the incident. The morning of the shooting, James was with Michael “Trapp” Tate, 26, and a few other people described as transient, all seeking refuge from the oppressive heat under a pergola in the park.
Witnesses reported that James and Tate, who were known to argue frequently, became
embroiled in a heated disagreement. A witness, Malcom Hartfield, recalled hearing James challenge Tate, saying something to the effect of, "Yeah, but you don't want to fight though." Tate reportedly retorted that he doesn't fight, he just shoots. Despite Hartfield's attempts to de-escalate the situation, telling the men it wasn't worth it in the extreme heat, Tate allegedly pulled a gun from his backpack and shot James. James was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and died. Tate fled the scene at the park, which is located near East Harmon Avenue and South Nellis Boulevard.
Following the shooting, Hartfield provided detectives with crucial information that helped identify Tate, including his social media profiles. On the Monday following the shooting, police arrested Tate after he was stopped for loitering at another park approximately five miles west of the crime scene. Tate was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center on an open murder charge. It was also revealed that he faces an additional charge for being a prohibited person in possession of a gun, stemming from a 2021 conviction for attempted robbery and other gun-related charges. Tate is being held without bail and was scheduled for a court appearance on the Thursday after his arrest. The case against Michael Tate represents the pursuit of justice for the death of Alveon James, a life lost to a senseless act of violence that shattered the stillness of a sweltering summer day.
