In the warm evening of July 5, 2018, in a southeastern Las Vegas Valley neighborhood, a violent encounter forever altered the lives of the Gonzalez-Campos family. That night, just after 10 p.m. on the 5000 block of Mountain Vista Street, near Tropicana Avenue, 32-year-old Miguel Gonzalez-Campos, a Hispanic male of Peruvian descent, was with his two brothers, Chris and Steven Campos, when gunfire erupted.
All three brothers were struck by bullets.
First responders rushed the wounded siblings to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. While Chris and Steven began the painful process of recovery from their injuries, Miguel’s wounds proved to be too severe. After two days of fighting for his life, Miguel Gonzalez-Campos succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on Saturday, July 7, 2018. The Clark County coroner officially ruled his death a homicide.
In the immediate aftermath, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department began their investigation into the triple shooting. The surviving brothers told detectives they believed they were about to be robbed just before the shots were fired. Investigators released few details about the ongoing case but did announce that they were searching for a white sedan that was seen in the area around the time of the shooting.
As his family grieved, Miguel was remembered as a kind-hearted, loving, and caring individual. Described as the middle child in a large family with four brothers and three sisters, he was known for his strong work ethic, often holding down two or three jobs at a time. His hard work was in part to support his younger brothers, Chris and Steven, in their musical aspirations. In the days following the tragic event, no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were made, leaving a family to mourn and a community to await answers.
