In the summer of 2014, the life of 54-year-old Michael McCarthy was cut short in a violent encounter in Las Vegas. On the morning of June 20th, events unfolded inside a residence on Heritage Court that would end in a triple shooting, leaving McCarthy dead. The incident, which took place near Sahara Avenue and Mojave Road, prompted a police investigation that would eventually lead to an arrest in the case.
Trouble began when a man named Kareem David Wilkes, 34, arrived at the home where
McCarthy was present. Wilkes, who also went by the street name "Money," was reportedly there to confront another resident of the house, James Heckman, with whom he had a "criminal relationship." A witness staying at the home told police that Wilkes had called the day before, inquiring about a lost wallet.
On the day of the shooting, Wilkes returned to the house with two other men. After breaking a window to gain entry, a confrontation ensued. McCarthy met Wilkes at the door and the two went into another room to talk. A witness overheard Wilkes demanding, "I want my money back," to which McCarthy reportedly replied, "I bet you do." The argument escalated, and Wilkes allegedly opened fire, shooting McCarthy.
In the ensuing chaos, Wilkes also shot two women who were inside the house before fleeing the scene. The investigation into the triple homicide led Las Vegas police to identify Wilkes as the primary suspect. He was later apprehended and booked on multiple charges, including murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, burglary with a firearm, and possession of a gun by a prohibited person. Police records indicated that Wilkes had a prior criminal history involving drugs.
