Edward Richard Budd, 47, male, was shot on the evening of December 19, 2017, on the 3600 block of Starbright Lane in west Las Vegas, near El Capitan Way and Spring Mountain Road. Officers called to the scene found two men who had each been struck multiple times; both were rushed to University Medical Center, where Budd died of his wounds. The Clark County coroner identified him the following day, confirming his age and residence in Las Vegas.
Detectives determined that Budd and the other man had been standing outside a residence when a man they knew approached them. Moments after what police described as an argument over money or property, the assailant opened fire and fled. The surviving victim was critically injured but lived, providing investigators with a clearer picture of what had unfolded outside the Starbright Lane home.
Within about 24 hours, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department identified 48-year-old Alex Yanko as the suspect. A regional Criminal Apprehension Team located him near the 4200–5200 block of South Fort Apache Road on December 20, and he was taken into custody without incident. Yanko was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of murder with a deadly weapon and attempted murder with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting that killed Budd and wounded the second victim.
