On the evening of December 18, 1975, a promising career in law enforcement was tragically cut short. Donald Robert Laabs, a 28-year-old Caucasian male, had just been promoted to detective sergeant with the Manitou Springs Police Department. An undercover narcotics agent known for his dedication and tenacity, Laabs had a track record of success, having been instrumental in numerous drug arrests across various jurisdictions in Colorado.
His work was dangerous, often placing him in the path of unpredictable individuals, but he had distinguished himself through his commitment to stemming the flow of illegal drugs. That evening, however, would be his last.
Earlier in the evening, witnesses observed Detective Sergeant Laabs leaving the police station around 8:00 p.m. and heading towards his home in Security, Colorado. His route was a familiar one, taking him onto the U.S. 24 Bypass towards Colorado Springs. It was a journey he had likely made many times, but on this particular night, it ended in violence. Approximately two hours after he was last seen, Laabs was discovered in his police vehicle on the southbound side of Interstate 25, just north of the Arvada Street exit in Colorado Springs. He had been shot eight times with a. 22 caliber handgun, a brutal end to a life dedicated to public service.
The circumstances surrounding his death were, and remain, shrouded in mystery. Investigators found that Laabs had been able to fire his own weapon at his assailants before he succumbed to his injuries, a final act of defiance in the face of a fatal ambush. Despite an intensive investigation, no clear motive for the killing was ever established. The case has grown cold over the decades, a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by a dedicated officer. To this day, the murder of Donald Robert Laabs remains unsolved, with no arrests ever made and no suspects publicly identified, leaving his family and colleagues without answers or justice.
