Matthew Scott Helberg, a 39-year-old man, was shot and killed on the evening of Thursday, June 26, 2025, in what authorities have described as a road rage incident. He was a father to five children and a stepfather to three more, and was returning home from a date with his fiancée, Sirena, when the fatal encounter occurred.
The tragic chain of events began
with a verbal exchange over the loud exhaust from Matthew's car. According to police reports, a friend of a man named Howard Heyliger made comments about the noise. This led to both parties pulling over. What started as a verbal argument between Matthew and Heyliger's friend soon escalated into a physical altercation. At this point, Heyliger, who had followed in a separate vehicle, got out of his car and shot Matthew multiple times.
In the aftermath, Howard Heyliger was arrested and charged with second-degree murder by the Colorado Springs Police Department. During questioning, Heyliger claimed that he fired his weapon because he believed his friend was in danger. However, his friend told investigators that he did not feel his life was threatened and was unsure why Heyliger resorted to shooting.
Matthew Helberg was remembered by his mother, Alisha, as being 'larger than life.' His family, devastated by the sudden loss, organized a funeral service for him and a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support his fiancée and her family. Friends recalled him as a sweet and kind individual who was always willing to help others.
