Jacob Langley, a 22-year-old White man, was a dedicated father and hard worker who had moved to Colorado Springs from Cushing, Oklahoma, in 2019. He was building a career as an HVAC installer and attending school to earn his license in the trade. His wife, Andrea Bettis, described him as an amazing father to their one-year-old daughter.
On the afternoon of November 25, 2022, a dispute at the Ridgeview Place Apartments on Knoll Lane turned fatal.
According to Jacob’s wife, she had a verbal altercation with a roommate who then allegedly pulled a firearm and pointed it at her and their daughter. She called Jacob to the apartment to help them pack their belongings and leave. While they were loading their car, the argument escalated, and Jacob took the roommate’s gun from him.
A short time later, around 3:27 p.m., Andrea said she heard gunshots from inside the apartment. She ran outside and claimed she saw the roommate yelling at Jacob before firing several more shots at him with a second gun as Jacob attempted to drive away. The car rolled to a stop. When Colorado Springs Police Department officers arrived, they found Jacob suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy, and his death was investigated as the 49th homicide in the city that year.
Shortly after the shooting, a suspect who knew Jacob voluntarily turned himself in to the authorities. Police confirmed that the incident was not a random act and that there were no other suspects. In the months following Jacob’s death, his family expressed frustration with the investigation, stating that the shooter was claiming self-defense.
The Colorado Springs Police Department ultimately closed the investigation without making an arrest or filing charges. Based on the evidence, authorities accepted the shooter's claim and ruled the killing was in self-defense. As of February 2024, police consider the case solved and closed.
