In the quiet neighborhood of Lorson Ranch in Colorado Springs, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a violent confrontation. Twenty-year-old Kenyatta Horne was shot and killed on October 7, 2018, during what authorities later described as a drug robbery gone wrong. The incident unfolded in the 6400 block of Tranters Creek Way, where a 911 caller reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a man lying on the sidewalk.
First responders arrived to find Horne unconscious and not breathing; he died at the scene despite their efforts to revive him.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a planned robbery over $800 worth of cocaine. A group of individuals, many of whom were current or former military members, had arranged to meet with Horne. During the encounter, a gunfight erupted. Investigators determined that a former Fort Carson soldier, 21-year-old Tyler Lee Wheeler, exchanged gunfire with Horne. It was a bullet from Wheeler's gun that proved fatal. Although Horne had drawn his own pistol, his wound would have been immediately incapacitating.
In the aftermath of the shooting, several arrests were made. Tyler Lee Wheeler was charged with murder and, in November 2019, was found guilty on multiple charges, including murder. He faced the possibility of life in prison without parole. Another man, 20-year-old Wayne Sellers, was also arrested and convicted of felony murder. Despite not being the one who fired the fatal shot, Sellers was sentenced to life without parole due to his participation in the robbery that led to Horne's death. His conviction and sentence were later upheld by an appeals court.
A third suspect, Beslim Torres-Valle, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. The investigation also led to the arrest of a fourth individual, Kyle Watts. For his role in the aggravated robbery that led to the deadly shooting, Watts was sentenced to 18 years in prison. The tragic event left a lasting impact on the community and the families involved, cutting short the life of a young man and resulting in lengthy prison sentences for the perpetrators.
