In the spring of 2021, a birthday celebration in Colorado Springs turned into a scene of unimaginable horror, forever altering the lives of a close-knit family. On May 9th of that year, 30-year-old Melvin Perez was tragically killed in a mass shooting that claimed the lives of five of his family members as well. The devastating event unfolded at a birthday party, where a joyous occasion was shattered by an act of domestic violence.
The gathering was being held at a home in the Canterbury
Mobile Home Park when the suspect, Teodoro Macias, arrived. Macias was the boyfriend of one of the victims, Sandra Ibarra-Perez, and was reportedly upset about not being invited to the party. Fueled by jealousy, he opened fire on the attendees, creating a scene of chaos and terror. Along with Melvin Perez, the victims included his wife, Mayra Ibarra de Perez, 32; Joana Cruz, 53; Jose Gutierrez, 21; Sandra Cecilia Ibarra, 28; and Jose Ibarra, 26.
The attack was swift and brutal, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. After carrying out the heinous act, the suspect, Teodoro Macias, turned the gun on himself, taking his own life at the scene. The investigation later confirmed that the mass shooting was rooted in domestic violence, with family members describing Macias's controlling and jealous behavior. Because the perpetrator died by suicide at the scene of the crime, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths. The incident left three children orphaned and a community mourning the senseless loss of six lives.
