Harry Walchuk, a 38-year-old male of European descent, was a doctoral student at the University of Texas in Austin. On August 1, 1966, he was fatally shot in the chest by Charles Whitman during the infamous University of Texas tower shooting. Walchuk had been doing research at the UT Library and was on his way to get something to eat when he was shot while walking along Guadalupe Street. He instantly collapsed onto the sidewalk and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charles Whitman, a former U.S. Marine and student at the university, carried out the mass shooting from the observation deck of the UT tower. Whitman had meticulously planned the attack, bringing a footlocker filled with weapons and ammunition to the tower. He had also written notes expressing anger and hostility, which were found next to the bodies of his wife and mother, whom he had murdered the night before.
The tragic event resulted in the deaths of 17 people, including Walchuk, and injured many others. Whitman was eventually killed by police officers who stormed the tower to end the massacre. The investigation revealed that Whitman had been suffering from severe mental health issues, including headaches and violent impulses.
Harry Walchuk is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota. His death, along with the other victims of the tower shooting, is remembered as one of the first modern public mass shootings in the United States.
