In a tragic turn of events on a Saturday evening, a domestic argument escalated into fatal violence, claiming the life of Kirk David Maroo. The 43-year-old man was fatally shot on May 20, 2017, inside a home located at 5639 Vermillion Bluffs Drive in the Stetson Hills area of Colorado Springs. The incident unfolded when Maroo became embroiled in a heated argument with his girlfriend upon their arrival at the residence.
The tension in the house quickly escalated, drawing the attention of
his girlfriend's son, 25-year-old Grant A. Motsinger. In an apparent attempt to drown out the dispute, Motsinger turned up the volume on the television. However, this action only served to intensify the animosity between the two men. The verbal sparring continued, leading to a physical confrontation. Motsinger then went upstairs and retrieved a. 45-caliber handgun.
In the ensuing struggle over the firearm, Maroo was shot. He was rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Motsinger was promptly arrested in connection with the shooting and was initially charged with second-degree murder. He was held at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on a $50,000 bond.
In the course of the legal proceedings, Motsinger pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless manslaughter. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, to be followed by a three-year period of parole.
