On a crisp November evening in Colorado Springs, the life of a hardworking family man was tragically cut short. On November 17, 2023, police responded to a call of a shooting in the 500 block of Bonfoy Avenue. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Despite the immediate medical aid rendered by officers and paramedics, the man succumbed to his injuries.
The victim was later identified as 49-year-old Daniel Ramirez Hernandez, a resident of Colorado Springs. He was a male of Hispanic/Latino ethnicity.
The investigation into Ramirez Hernandez's death was swiftly taken over by the Colorado Springs Police Department's Homicide Unit. His death was officially ruled a homicide, marking the 30th such case in the city for that year. For weeks, detectives worked to piece together the events of that fateful night, seeking to bring justice for a man known for his dedication to his family and his craft. Ramirez Hernandez, originally from Morales, Guatemala, had made a life for himself in the United States after moving here at the age of 17. He was the proud owner of his own stucco contracting company and was remembered for his exceptional skills and his infectious sense of humor.
The breakthrough in the case came nearly two months later. On January 10, 2024, the CSPD Homicide Unit secured arrest warrants for two individuals in connection with the murder of Daniel Ramirez Hernandez. The suspects were identified as 52-year-old Fredy Marquez-Hurvina and a 15-year-old male whose name was not released due to his age. The following day, the 15-year-old was taken into custody without incident at a local high school by the Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force. The second suspect, Marquez-Hurvina, was already incarcerated at the El Paso County Jail on an unrelated warrant at the time the murder warrant was issued. Both suspects face a charge of Murder in the First Degree.
