In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs, police responded to a call of a shooting. Arriving at the 4400 block of Fountain Springs Grove at approximately 12:25 AM on November 2, 2021, officers discovered a grim scene. Inside a parked vehicle, two men were found deceased. One of the victims was identified as 54-year-old Leroy Law. The other man was 20-year-old Darius Cheatom. Both men were residents of Colorado Springs.
The El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted autopsies on November 3, 2021, and their deaths were officially ruled as homicides, marking the 33rd and 34th homicide investigations in the city for that year.
For weeks, the investigation into the double homicide continued as detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department's Homicide/Assault Unit pieced together the events that led to the deaths of Law and Cheatom. The community was asked to come forward with any information that might lead to an arrest.
Then, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, a breakthrough was announced. Detectives with the Homicide/Assault Unit had secured an arrest warrant for a 15-year-old male. The teenage suspect was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Leroy Law and Darius Cheatom. The arrest was made at the Zebulon Pike Youth Services Center, where the juvenile was already being held on unrelated charges.
