On the evening of October 25, 1986, 55-year-old Barbara A. Freyschlag, a White female, was found murdered in the kitchen of her Upper Skyway home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her husband, K.G. Freyschlag, discovered her body upon returning from a business trip. An investigation revealed she had been shot multiple times at close range with a large-caliber weapon. That evening, Mrs.
Freyschlag had attended a party at the El Paso Club and had left alone.
The scene of the crime left investigators with a perplexing puzzle. There were no signs of forced entry, robbery, or a struggle within the home, and the house did not appear to have been ransacked. Friends of Mrs. Freyschlag informed police that it was uncharacteristic of her to leave her doors unlocked, leading investigators to suspect she may have known her assailant or that the perpetrator had a key to her residence. Despite an intensive investigation into the death of the prominent community member, who owned the Broadmoor Ski Shop and was an active volunteer, no suspects have ever been officially identified, and no arrests have been made in the case.
The murder of Barbara Freyschlag has remained an unsolved cold case for decades, leaving a lasting impact on the Colorado Springs community. Although police at one point suspected her husband, who was the president of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce at the time of the murder, he was in Reno on business when she was killed and was never charged. K.G. Freyschlag passed away in 2011. The case remains open, one of approximately 90 unsolved homicides in the Colorado Springs area, with law enforcement still hopeful that new information might one day bring justice for Barbara Freyschlag.
