In the winter of 2022, a tragic sequence of events unfolded in the Lorson Ranch neighborhood of Colorado Springs, culminating in the death of 27-year-old Vanessa Anderson. The promising life of this young woman, who was six months pregnant, was cut short on December 19th in a violent encounter that also claimed the life of her friend.
The day before the fatal incident, a frantic Vanessa Anderson had reached out to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office for assistance. She requested a law enforcement escort to safely retrieve her belongings from the home she shared with her ex-boyfriend, Wilmer Soto. However, her request was denied as there was no immediate evidence of a threat that would legally permit deputies to intervene without a court order.
Tragically, on the following day, Vanessa, accompanied by her friend Autumn Kirkpatrick, age 26, returned to the residence on Rubicon Drive. It was there that Soto opened fire, killing both women before barricading himself inside the house. The situation quickly escalated into a standoff with law enforcement. Hours later, after unsuccessful attempts to establish communication, SWAT members entered the home and discovered the bodies of Anderson, Kirkpatrick, and Soto. Investigators concluded that Soto had murdered the two women before taking his own life.
Further investigation into Soto's background revealed a prior protection order filed against him by an ex-wife, citing domestic abuse, though it had been dismissed a year after being issued.
